Company History
Silver Express has been in business at the Kendall Tamiami Executive Airport since 1984. Thomas Shaffer and a partner purchased the company in 1990 from Victor Alvarez, who had owned and operated it for the preceding 2 1/2 years. Mr. Shaffer is the President and CEO and as such, is responsible for the day to day operations of the company. A Commercial Pilot of 20 years, he also has an A&P Mechanics Certificate with Inspection Authorization, a Bachelor's Degree in Aeronautics and a Masters Degree in Finance.
Until March of 1992, Silver Express operated light rental aircraft under the Federal Aviation Administration Regulation (FAR) Part 61. In March of 92 the company was granted an air agency certificate, number XUEV209K, to operate as a flight school under (FAR) Part 141. The company was awarded the Miami Dade Community College Aviation flight contract, which took effect January 1992. The contract ended December 31, 1995.
Since January 1991, Silver Express has grown from a fleet of three aircraft, to as many as fifteen. There are currently nine aircraft on the flight line. The age of the fleet has improved from an average of 14.5 years old to an average of 11.2 years old. This is especially impressive considering the average age of the total general aviation fleet is 28 years.
The company currently operates two Cessna 152's (2 seat trainers), two Cessna 172's (4 seat trainers), two piper Cadets, (4 seat trainer), one Piper Cherokee, one Piper Arrow, and one Piper Seminole (4 seat, multi-engine trainer). Four of the aircraft are 1990 models or newer. The fleet includes a 1998 and a 2000 model Skyhawk. All the aircraft are equipped with the latest avionics and are in exceptional condition.
In addition to aircraft rentals and flight instruction, Silver Express provides aircraft parking, fuel and maintenance, aircraft sales and a well stocked pilot shop.
